Come one, come all! It's time for the Camai 2000 Dance Festival in Bethel, Alaska. Twenty-five dance groups have arrived from the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, Mexico, California and Atka, to name just a few. Yup'ik Elders are preparing to share their words of wisdom. Over fifty artisans are gathering to sell their crafts. Contestants for the Mr. and Miss Camai Contest are anxious to see who will wear the next crowns. An exotic array of foods have been donated for the Native Foods Dinner. Fur fashions from near and far will be on display and modeled. Free dental examinations, up close and personal opportunities to meet the dancers and much, much more will highlight the program during this weekend's festivities at the Bethel Regional High School.
Under the sponsorship of Bethel Council on the Arts and the Alaska State Council on the Arts, with support from many local, regional and statewide agencies, businesses and corporations, the fun begins Friday,April 7, at 5:30 PM with the lighting of the ceremonial flame in the high school gym. Over 5000 people will attend the Camai 2000 Dance Festival Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The entire town is alive with music, excitement andanticipation as the community of Bethel rolls out the red carpet to welcome one and all. So, start the drum beat, for the eleventh year in a row and let the dancing and singing begin. Camai 2000 promises to enchant one and all with the magical celebration of this time honored traditional event, as echoed in this year's theme, First Dance.
