KID: Kodiak Island Dancers

Mission Statement: KID is dedicated to teaching musical expression to kids through the art and fun of hand drumming. We emphasize the DRUM concepts: discipline, respect and unity through music.

KID was started by Michael Daquioag in 1999 as a performance-oriented youth drumming group. We are a member of the Kodiak Arts Council. KID consists of 15-20 members, has a repertoire of over an hour, and has performed at many public and private functions. We play a variety of drums, including congas, bongos, tubanos djembes, timbales, and djun-djuns. We raise funds from public concerts, performances, workshops, and private donations. In January 2002, we performed at the Anchorage Folk Festival, where we conducted nine drum workshops and four performances at three Anchorage elementary schools and the University of Alaska, and received the only standing ovation given at the Folk Festival on that day.

We make a conscious effort to seek out opportunities to perform for, and conduct workshops with under-privileged groups, including handicapped adults and students from low-income and remote village locations.

KID is truly a multi-cultural group. The student performers represent the entire spectrum of ethnic diversity in Kodiak, including Caucasian, Philipino, Hispanic, Asian, Alaskan Native, and African-American. Our music crosses many boundaries, mixing drumming styles from Africa, South America, Japan and Asia, and is enjoyed by people from every background. When we visit, teach, and perform, the members of KID are ambassadors for the community and the children of Kodiak. We love drums! And we love sharing our music with others. Through our workshops, we interact with students from Kindergarten to Seniors, including handicapped adults. All of them love drums. It is an excellent way of teaching rhythm, cooperation, and musical concepts in a manner that is fun, educational, and physically stimulating.

KID conducts workshops and performances for grades K-12 and other community groups. Above, Michael directs a performance for Sand Lake Elementary School in Anchorage. We have also been a regular feature at the Kodiak Crab Festival. In workshops, we teach hand drumming techniques, emphasizing teamwork, listening, respect, and self expression. Even novices who have never played a drum before have a good time. Performances usually last 45 minutes to an hour, and can be presented as part of a convention, celebration, or other public gathering. Workshops can take up to 2 hours, and can be tailored to your groups needs. At almost every performance we get audience members onstage to play, sing or dance with us. Everybody has a good time.

Kodiak Island Drummers will perform on Friday at 7:20p.m., Saturday at 10:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:15 p.m. You can also meet them Up Close and Personal on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Room C15.

KID can conduct a performance or drumming workshop for your organization.
